Thomas Orlina Shines a Light on Mental Health for Teen Mental Wellness Day

"I felt the need to really share my story. I had never really gone through therapy before and really hadn't sought out that kind of guidance," the artist tells Advocate Now.

This time, Thomas Orlina is encouraging people to ask for help.

In honor of World Teen Mental Wellness Day, the artist released a single with an accompanying music video to raise awareness of for mental health and the resources that are available for those who are struggling.

"I felt the need to really share my story. I had never really gone through therapy before and really hadn't sought out that kind of guidance," he tells Sonia Baghdady of Advocate Now. "I got really inspired to create a project called 'This Time,' that was really for people out there to know that it's okay to seek help, and that guidance is out there."

Orlina shares that the project "pushed my creative boundaries," as when he first began to grapple with his mental health, he was "very fearful" of going to therapy and openly speaking about it, as he "had never done something like this before." Now, he says "it's so empowering to use your voice."

"There's so many people out there that feel alone. And I think that's like the first thing you should always think of is, you're not alone. There's so many people out there that might feel the way that you feel. And there are so many resources now out there for people." Orlina says. "Go on websites, read about different therapists, and also reach out to your family and friends."

While it may take time to find the right therapist or treatment, Orlina believes the search is well worth it. He says that public figures being transparent and open about their journeys can also inspire people to take on the task.

He says: "It's important to have those people use their platforms and to continue to normalize these conversations. There's so much every single day that we can do to make a difference."
