Spotlight: The Powerful Women of The CW Network
The CW is a network full of powerful female characters -- and there's an equally powerful ensemble of talent behind the scenes making it all possible. Many of them are doing it in the simplest way possible -- by being themselves.
“A lot of people, especially in the entertainment business, think that they have to follow some kind of guideline, and I’m gonna be the first to tell you that anytime that you see me, I’m exactly who I am. On screen. Off screen. I don’t really know how to be anything better but myself.” - Bre-Z, All American
At the same time, shows like All American and Legacies are changing the narrative in the writers' room, by leaning into storylines and characters that increase representation on screen.
Kaylee Bryant speaks about the character she plays in Legacies — Josie, a normal, young girl who happens to be pansexual.
“Having that representation constantly being put out there for people to identify with, I think, is really important.
A superhero on screen in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Tala Ashe explains how The CW encourages its young, female audience to soar in real life.
“If a young woman sees herself reflected in a woman of power, either as an actor playing a part on screen, or as a show runner, or as a writer, or as a director, it just broadens your horizons.”
Another Legend of Tomorrow, Maisie Richardson-Sellers stressed the importance of the team behind-the-scenes in ensuring that the stories being told are accurate and fair.
“I think a massive amount of responsibility is on the writers’ rooms, and the networks, and the studios to really implement this change.
