Netflix's Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle
A new, live action take on The Jungle Book is now streaming on Netflix, and this one features Christian Bale, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Cate Blanchett.
The film's director Andy Serkis pulls double duty as Baloo the bear. We asked him how closely this resembles Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book.
“It’s close to the tone of the book, which was written in the 1890s. The journey of Mowgli is really what this film focuses on.”
Serkis explained that the adaptions audiences are accustomed to tend to focus more on the fun-loving aspects of the animals, and the almost magical relationships that Mowgli has with them. His take focuses more on Mowgli himself.
“This is really about a boy who is of ‘other’. He doesn’t fit into the world of animals, and neither does he fit into the world of man.”
Rohan Chand plays Mowgli. We asked him about taking on the role.
“I grew up reading Rudyard Kipling’s short stories, so it’s really great to almost bring my hero to life.”
Young Chand was quick to express his joy and gratitude at playing opposite such esteemed actors as Andy Serkis, Benedict Cumberbatch, Christian Bale, and Cate Blanchett.
“Being able to work and learn from them is really incredible."
Although filming began in London, it eventually moved to the real jungles of South Africa. Chand told us about the immersive nature of the authentic environment.
“I’m walking around bare feet, so it’s a little bit thrilling and exciting.”
