In the late 1970's, something new and fresh took over the airwaves. Punk Rock and New Wave music started pushing it's way onto the music scene.
The focus of the day was on what is now referred to as "Classic Rock." For the younger generation not hanging out listening to the Stones and Zeppelin, this was a movement they could get behind. There was a raw energy that struck a chord and one of the bands that stood out was The Go-Go's. Founded in 1978 in the thick of the Los Angeles punk scene, the Go-Go's were the first all-girl group to write their own material and play all their own instruments.
Moving toward a more pop-rock sound, the Go-Go's broke big in the early 1980's with their first album, "Beauty and the Beat." The album eventually went to number one and contained the chart-topping singles "We Got the Beat" and "Our Lips Are Sealed." The band followed up with their second album "Vacation" and cemented themselves as rock royalty.
While the early 80's were the group's golden years, the mid-to late 80's were not as kind. The band decided to call it quits in 1985 as disagreement and fracture as well as personal struggles materialized within the group. The members moved on with solo careers, most notably that of lead singer Belinda Carlisle.
The band has re-united several times over the years and now once again for the launch of their new Showtime documentary "The Go-Go's," directed by Allison Ellwood. Our #SeeHER Celebrity Spotlight, we feature the most successful female rock band of all time, The Go-Go's!
