Susan Sarandon Arrested at Fair Wage Protest

Susan Sarandon was arrested on Monday in Albany while protesting for fair wages for restaurant workers.

Susan Sarandon was arrested on Monday in Albany while protesting for fair wages for restaurant workers.

The actor was among eight who were arrested for disorderly conduct at the New York capital, police told The New York Post. State police accused the group of "obstructing walking traffic" in a government building. They were then detained, issued appearance tickets, and released.

Sarandon is the president of One Fair Wage, an organization that advocates for raising the minimum wage of tipped workers so that they do not have to rely on tips for a living and are always ensured a fair, baseline wage. This includes restaurant workers, nail salon technicians, hairdressers, massage therapists, and any others in a field reliant on tipping.

“They are very, very important and need to be treated with dignity, not only for the back-breaking labor that they do, but what they have to do to communicate and understand and be patient and all the things that are linked to a successful business,” Sarandon said at the rally before her arrest.

New York legislators recently passed a $229 billion spending plan that aims to raise the state minimum wage from $15 to $17 per hour by 2026. The minimum wage for tipped workers is $10 per hour, with employers only mandated to pay more if their employees do not make $15 per hour after tips.

Tipped workers tend to be largely women, people of color, and immigrants. Assemblywoman Jessica González-Roja from Queens has sponsored a bill to raise the minimum wage for tipped workers, to ensure that vulnerable populations are not taken advantage of and receive fair compensation.

"Our working-class communities are suffering and struggling, but we can't leave our tipped workers behind," she previously told local network Spectrum News 1. "It is always the right time to do the right thing."
