Spike Lee is preparing to direct a multi-part documentary for ESPN on Colin Kaepernick that will feature extensive interviews with the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback and a peek into to his personal archive.

Announced Tuesday by ESPN films, Lee will stitch together exclusive, never-before-seen footage from Kaepernick's archive to provide better detail.

“Kaepernick, who has never given a full, first-person account of his journey, is collaborating closely with Lee who plans to use extensive new interviews and a vast never-before-seen archive to help Kaepernick tell his story from his perspective.”

The NFL has encouraged teams to look at Kaepernick, although he hasn’t received another pro contract yet. Kaepernick last played pro football in 2016, the same year he started kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial injustice.

Jemele Hill, former ESPN personality has also been attached as a producer. The documentary will reportedly be executively produced by ESPN Films and produced by Lee's 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks. No title or release date for the docu-series was announced.Athlete docuseries have been all the rage since ESPN's "The Last Dance" series on Michael Jordan, and with Tom Brady's "Man in the Arena" series and Apple TV+'s upcoming Magic Johnson project it will most definitely be phenomenal.
This isn't the first media project to be released on Kaepernick's life or career, as Netflix's "Colin in Black and White," directed by Ava DuVernay, released last October.
