There's a new captain in charge on Star Trek: Discovery!
When the season three finale of the critically acclaimed spinoff aired earlier this year, fans were sent into a frenzy. Sonequa Martin-Green's character, Michael Burnham, was promoted to captain.
A poster featuring Sonequa was released at New York Comic Con with the tagline: "The chair is hers now." This takes on a whole new meaning when you consider that this is about more than just a chair. This is the first time in Star Trek history that audiences will see an African-American female captain. We connected with Sonequa who got emotional when talking about the momentous occasion:
"It's so gorgeous. It's so monumental. It's so important. It's such a blessing and it feels like a lot of things are coming to fruition with it... I mean this is a little bit of a confession but in the green room, Michelle (Paradise) graciously showed me the key art for the first time. I hadn't seen it yet and I had to hold back the tears, it's a lot."
Captain Janeway herself, Kate Mulgrew had this to say about her fellow Star Trek franchise pioneer:
"Well it's great isn't it? It's pretty great... She's absolutely lovely"
Sonequa's Discovery co-star, Mary Wiseman added:
"Even having Sonequa as a leader and learning from her grace and from her strength and intelligence. It's been so incredible to have so many models of what a strong, empowered but still compassionate and generous and loving woman is."
The highly anticipated fourth season is almost here and it will be the first season to premiere on Paramount Plus.
Season four of Star Trek: Discovery premieres Thursday November 18th on Paramount Plus.
