With 2022 right around the corner, it's time to take a look at the highs and lows of soaps from this past year. Soap Opera Digest Editorial DirectorStephanie Sloane gave us the inside scoop into how the soap world is wrapping up this year with the best and worst issue of the magazine.
People love seeing Marla and I together, so we’ve paired up on screen many times since 227… but I must say, each and every time is an honor.

Starting off with the good news of course, Sloane shared which costars some of our favorite soaps actors were impressed with this year.
Wally Kurth, who plays Justin Kiriakis in Days of Our Lives and also Ned Quatermaine on General Hospital, expressed his appreciation for new cast members with Sloane. Kurth has been present in the soaps world for several decades, and he admired how actors new to the soaps scene were able to adapt so swiftly to Covid guidelines. Kurth distinguished one of the new stars of Days, Jackée Harry, saying that she and other actors "have come onto the show with the Covid protocols and have had to learn this really hard medium wearing masks".
Thorsten Kaye and Jacqueline MacInnes Wood, who play Ridge and Steffy Forrester on The Bold and the Beautiful, both noted that their costar, John McCook, impressed them the most this year. McCook stands as one of the longest-surviving actors of the show, and with all the B&B experience he has gained throughout his career, Kaye and Wood said he played his most recent storyline with "grace and dignity".
Joshua Morrow, who stars as Nicholas Newman on The Young and the Restless, distinguished his on-screen daughter, Hunter King, as the actress he was most impressed with this year. Hunter plays Summer Newman on Y&R, and Morrow identified King as a "tremendous talent" for taking on such a complex role. Morrow also disclosed to Sloane that King "slays him with her performances" and since the absence of Summer from the show, he misses her a lot.
Sloane also shared a few casting updates hitting the soaps world as we move into the new year.
Greg Vaughan, known for his roles on General Hospital, Y&R, and Days, is returning to Days as his beloved character, Eric Brady. Eric is reappearing on the show in a completely different light, as Sloane shared that the character is making his return in a priest's collar.
Continuing on with casting updates coming to Days, Eileen Davidson, Chandler Massey, Greg Rikaart, and Zach Tinker are all joining Alison Sweeney for the Days of Our Lives: A Very Salem Christmas special, which will only be airing on Peacock. The holiday special is available to stream starting December 16th.
