Americans have been waiting years for their own version of Europe's iconic competition show "Eurovision." Now, they finally have it.
First, what is "Eurovision?" It's the annual competition between European countries where each nation submits representatives for a campy pageant, filled with live performances and breathtaking costumes. As Kelly Clarkson describes it,
“It’s the biggest and longest-running music competition in the world and has launched huge stars like Abba, Celine Dion and Måneskin. And now it’s our turn, y’all.”
That's right-- America finally gets Amerivision. Except it's not called that, and instead of featuring performers from South America and other Latin American countries, the competition show only features performers from the fifty U.S. territories.
“American Song Contest” has 56 performers, with one artist from each state, as well as five U.S. territories and the District of Columbia. That's a lot of performances to fit in one episode, but not to worry--only around eleven competitors compete each week.
A jury of over fifty six talents from each state vote every week on their favorite showcase, as well as the following three performers who will move forward.
The series also promises that each week will have a song worthy of going viral. The first episode's was Ryan Charles of Wyoming's "New Boot Goofin," as viewers on Tik Tok weren't entirely sure what to make of the neon spectacle.
Charles describes the song as “the confidence you have getting a new pair of boots”, and was just happy for everyone to have a fun time with it.
But it's not just up and coming performers that are featured. Making a surprise appearance by representing Connecticut was Michael Bolton, who performed with the first group of contestants in a surprise reveal.
While we didn't get over the top costumes like "Eurovision," producers promise that the series will continue to showcase all of America's unique territories.
