Six migrant workers were struck by an SUV outside of a Walmart on Sunday in an act police believe was intentional.
The incident occurred around 1:17 p.m. at a Walmart in Lincolnton, North Carolina, which is approximately 35 miles from Charlotte and home to just 12,000.
Car Strikes Migrants
"Six migrant workers were hit in what appears to be an intentional assault with a vehicle," the Lincolnton Police Department said in a statement.
The six victims were hospitalized at Atrium Health Lincoln for “various injuries," according to Major Brian R Greene of the Lincolnton Police Department, who told The New York Times that “none" of the migrants are "in critical condition."
Police describe the driver as an older White man. He drove off after striking the migrants and has not yet been apprehended. The make and model of the SUV is unknown, but in the surveillance footage released by police, the vehicle appears black in color. Officials hope that someone will recognize the car and report it.
The vehicle can be seen in the video driving over a grass median between parking spaces to reach the migrants. Greene added that interviews with the victims did not reveal a possible connection.
“We’re trying to locate the individual that did this,” he added. “Right now, we don’t have a lot.”
Authorities say they believe the act was intentional, but are not yet investigating it as a hate crime, as they are unaware of the potential motivation.
"The motives of the suspect are still under investigation," the department statement said.
The incident occurred nearly four months after a similar one in May, in which individual purposefully ran a Range Rover into a crowd of migrants outside of a homeless shelter in Brownsville, Texas, killing eight people and injuring another ten. The driver was apprehended and charged with manslaughter.
