Selena Gomez

In the April issue of Vogue, actress and singer Selena Gomez explores politics, mental health, and upcoming projects, including her Spanish EP 'Revelación.'

Currently wrapping Only Murders in the Building (2021-) Selena Gomez sat down with Vogue to reflect on the past year and the way her eyes have been opened like never before.

Wrapping Up 'Only Murders in the Building'

Gomez is currently in Manhattan alongside her co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short, wrapping up their new Hulu series Only Murders in the Building where the three are strangers who get tangled in the same crime.

When asked about working with Gomez, Steve Martin recounts the selection process for her role and the moment somebody brought up Gomez.

'What about Selena Gomez?' and it's just—yes, of course. There was no question except 'Can we get her?' We knew she would enhance the show in so many ways, the number one being talent."

A Busy Woman up to so Much Good

Gomez is currently on Season 2 of her HBO Max series Selena + Chef (2020-), a cooking series where renowned chefs put the multi-platinum selling artist to the ultimate cooking test.

On top of her cooking show, Gomez has also been executive producing numerous projects, such as 13 Reasons Why (2017-2020), This Is the Year (2020), The Broken Hearts Gallery (2020), and more.

Gomez also owns her own cosmetics line, Rare Beauty, whose impact fund has pledged to raise $100 million for mental-health services.

Gomez's Relationship With Politics

In her interview with the magazine, Gomez dove deep into her relationship with politics, admitting the 2020 election was her first time voting. Gomez never knew how important one vote matters until she began educating herself.

Gomez wants to do more than just an Instagram post, she wants to incite change. Therefore, she began pursuing various organizations in order to gain the correct knowledge.

CEO of the Center for Countering Digital Hate, Imran Ahmed, discusses her relationship with Gomez stating,

"Selena reached out through her manager last fall, wanting to understand why exactly things were going so wrong and what specific things she could do to make things better... I understood why her brand is so, so powerful. There's just this goodness to her. She's very moral. And she gives these issues a broad appeal beyond any individual political party. As you can tell, she's not a party-political person. She's someone who really believes in people."

Major Health Complications Along the Way

Throughout Gomez's journey, the artist has dealt with issues in mental and physical health. Burnt out, Gomez entered a rehabilitation center in 2014 and revealed her lupus diagnosis to fans in 2015.

According to lupus.org, the disease is described as,

"a chronic (long-term) disease that can cause inflammation and pain in any part of your body. It's an autoimmune disease, which means that your immune system — the body system that usually fights infections — attacks healthy tissue instead."

The artist has been rushed to the ICU numerous times due to her illness, once having a vein removed and almost reaching the edge.

The Long Awaited "Revelation"

Gomez's debut Spanish EPRevelación (2021) is coming out this Friday. The extended play is produced by Tainy of "I Like It" (2018) and Bad Bunny's X 100pre (2018).

Tainy describes working with Gomez stating,

"She can hit high notes if she wants to, she can explode in a chorus, but there's this softness. It's angelic. You want to leave space around her vocal. What I'll say is, a lot of artists generate emotion through power—what's different about Selena is that she generates emotion through subtlety."

Gomez describes the project as an homage to her heritage, coming from a family where her paternal grandparents were undocumented. The artist has grown so much in the past 28 years and has done more than one can count.
