After the news of music icon Tina Turner's death, Lizzo paid a moving tribute to the Queen of Rock and Roll.
At her concert Wednesday in Phoenix, Arizona, Lizzo performed a heartfelt and cathartic rendition of Turner's 1970 hit, "Proud Mary." She shared the performance on social media while praising Turner's enduring legacy.
"Today, we lost an icon," Lizzo said. "And I haven’t allowed myself to be sad. I haven’t allowed myself to cry about it. And I don’t want to right now because I’d much rather celebrate the incredible legend Tina Turner is. As a Black girl in a rock band, I would not exist if it was not for the Queen of Rock 'n' Roll."
She shouted three times: "There would be no rock 'n' roll without Tina Turner!" before jumping into a high-energy performance, complete with flashy fashion and theatrics, an homage to Turner's style.
Turner rose from humble beginnings and overcame a notoriously abusive marriage to become one of the most popular female artists of all time. She died peacefully in her home at the age of 83, with her verified Instagram account confirming the news shortly after.
"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner. With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow," a statement read. "Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly."
Several musical legends have since paid homage to Turner, including Beyoncé, Cher, Dolly Parton, Mick Jagger, and Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys. Many other celebrities have also expressed remorse, including Oprah Winfrey, and even former-president Barack Obama.
President Joe Biden also praised Turner's "remarkable" personal strength, saying she "changed music forever."
