The world famous San Diego Comic-Con has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, the team behind the convention is getting creative by holding events in an online format.
The Original Announcement
Comic Con recently gave a statement on their Instagram page saying that the event originally scheduled for July 22-26 will be canceled this year. As a result, they gave two options to those who already purchased their tickets: receive a refund or apply their payment to next year's event.
It was said that the convention was looking into an online version of the SDCC, and that news has now been made official as of today, June 11!
Spokesperson David Glazer revealed in a statement to TV Guide:
"With Comic-Con@Home, SDCC hopes to deliver the best of the Comic-Con experience and a sense of its community to anyone with an internet connection and an interest in all aspects of pop culture. Plans for Comic-Con@Home include an online Exhibit Hall complete with everyone's favorite exhibitors offering promotions, specials, and limited-edition products unique to the celebration. As well, Comic-Con@Home promises exclusive panels and presentations about comics, gaming, television, film, and a wide variety of topics from publishers, studios, and more...For the first time in our 50-year history, we are happy to welcome virtually anyone from around the globe. Though stay-at-home conditions makes this a very difficult time, we see this as an opportunity to spread some joy and strengthen our sense of community."
