Salt-N-Pepa #SeeHER Spotlight

Today's spotlight shines on three of the most influential women in hip-hop, Salt-N-Pepa. The Grammy-award winning trio broke boundaries and paved the way for today's female megastars.

#SeeHER Spotlight: Salt-N-Pepa

Salt-N-Pepa hit the scene in a different age. In the 1980s, rap and hip-hop were on the rise, but it was this trio that put women in the mix. The females artists who followed have passed through the barriers that they broke down.

When Salt-N-Pepa's 1987 hit "Push It" took over the airwaves, a hit female rapper was practically, if not literally, unheard of. Since then, they've achieved a string of historic milestones; their fourth studio album “Very Necessary” became the first multi-platinum selling album for a female rap act, and they became the first females in rap to win a Grammy for their single “None of Your Business”.

“We brought fun, fashion, and femininity to hip-hop.” - Cheryl "Salt" James

Sticking to a simple formula of being real women, having fun, and saying what they wanted to say, Salt-N-Pepa are still going strong, three decades after they worked side-by-side as friends at a Sears in Queens.
