Columnist Andrew Hornery caused a media firestorm after revealing that his newspaper, the Sydney Morning Herald, was going to announce Rebel Wilson's relationship.
Many on Twitter have been showing support for Wilson, after she announced her relationship with her girlfriend Ramona Agruma.
Wilson took to Twitter to respond to one of her supporters, Australian journalist Kate Doak.
“So apparently it wasn't @RebelWilson's choice to come out... The @smh/@theage have admitted to giving her a heads up 2 days in advance that they were going to "out" her. What's worse, openly gay men at the Sydney Morning Herald were involved in this. 🤦🏼‍♀️ https://t.co/Zl80zg01SW”— Kate Doak (@Kate Doak) 1654918889
"Thanks for your comments. It was a very hard situation but trying to handle it with grace." Wilson replied.
The 42-year-old actress was given a two-day heads up by the Sydney Morning Herald that they were going to release the news, so Wilson decided to keep her destiny in her own hands and make the announcement herself, over Instagram.
In the June 10 opinion piece that spurred the controversy, Andrew Hornery wrote,
"It was an abundance of caution and respect that this media outlet emailed Rebel Wilson's representatives on Thursday morning, giving her two days to comment on her new relationship with another woman, LA leisure wear designer Ramona Agruma, before publishing a single word. Big mistake. Wilson opted to gazump the story."
After the Column was released, many on social media started going after Hornery and the Sydney Morning Herald, accusing them of trying to out the actress.
This led the Sydney Morning Herald Editor Bevan Shields to respond to the backlash in his own article published yesterday.
"Our weekly Private Sydney celebrity column last week asked Wilson if she wished to comment about her new partner. We would have asked the same questions had Wilson's new partner been a man. To say that the Herald 'outed' Wilson is wrong," Shields wrote.
Whatever the case, it looks like Wilson found her "Disney Princess."
