Oscar 2021 Nominations: Two Women Up for Best Director

The Academy Awards have nominated more than one women in the Best Director category for the first time!

The award show history keepings coming! This year, the 93rd annual Oscars have nominated two female filmmakers for Best Director.

The academy announced the nominees Monday, which consisted of Chloe Zhao (Nomadland) and Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Women) alongside three other nominees, David Fincher, Lee Isaac Chung and Thomas Vinterberg.

This category is not common to be filled with women creators. Only five female filmmakers have been recognized before, and we haven't seen a female nominee sine 2017.

Zhao is the first woman of color to be nominated for a directing Oscar. In February, Zhao had made history by becoming the first Asian woman to win Best Director at the Golden Globes. Her film Nomadland, which follows a woman who loses her job after the recession, had also won Best Picture and is in the running at this year's Oscars.

Fennell is another female director in the running for Best Director. Her movie Promising Young Woman about a medial school drop out who decides to catch predatory men, is up for five Oscar nominations. The team is also in the running for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.

If either women were to snag the win, she would become the second female named for best director. Kathryn Bigelow had been the previous female winner for her film The Hurt Locker in 2010.

The Oscars are set to air Sunday, April 25th, live on ABC at 8 pm.m ET! Be sure to click here to learn all you need to know about the upcoming 93rd annual Academy Awards.
