Is the Prom based on a true story?

It started as a true story. In 2010 Mississippi, Constance McMillen was told she couldn't bring her girlfriend to the school prom.

Once that story went 'viral', it inspired a Tony-nominated Broadway musical, called: The Prom.

Now, super-director Ryan Murphy has turned that broadway show into a new Netflix film with an incredible cast that includes: Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, James Corden, Kerry Washington, Keegan-Michael Key and Andrew Rannells. Much of the cast talked with Advocate Channel's Rachel Smith about the inspiring story.

Jo Ellen Pellman on making her first movie:

"Filming our final number. No one wanted to go home. And we all got into this like group hug, mosh pit. They started playing We Are The Champions over the speakers. It was truly like the high school football team had won the state championship. Like we were gonna remember that moment forever"

Keegan-Michael Key on being romanced by Meryl Streep in the movie:

"...it is surreal in the best possible way."

Andrew Rannells:

"This is the first time I've done a movie musical, which is how I was introduced to musicals as a kid, was movie musicals. So, it was really exciting and very special to me that I got to be a part of something this massive"

James Corden:

"The message of the film is to accept everybody, for who they are, regardless of who they love"

Netflix

James Corden:

"I think always look to the glitter and try and divert your mind from the bitter and you'll have an infinitely better day if you seek those little life lessons."
