Netflix has just announced they landed a spinoff of Tim Burton's The Addams Family for eight episodes, all centered around the iconic Wednesday Addams.
The live-action coming-of-age series, Wednesday, is written by Al Gough and Miles Millar and directed by Tim Burton. This will be the director's TV directorial debut.
The show was described in further detail in a press release:
"Wednesday attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore."
While the original project was first rumored back in October, no involvement of Netflix was known at the time.
The Addams Familyoriginated from a cartoon in 1938, and since then has had many stage and screen adaptions. The iconic 1964 TV series of the family inspired the 1991 film of the same name, and led to Addams Family Values just two years later.
The Addams Family musical debuted on Broadway in 2010, winning several awards including a Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, and a Drama League Award. While the Broadway show closed in December of 2011, the show went on a national tour of North America in 2011, a US/Asia tour in 2013, and a 2017 UK tour.
While Burton was supposed to work with the franchise with directing a 3D stop motion animation of The Addams Family, the project was scrapped in 2013. Because of that, the upcoming series will be Burton's first real work with the family.
While no further details involving the cast or launch date are known, we are already snapping our fingers for this new series!
