Netflix has officially acquired the rights to the newest SpongeBob movie. Viacom has released ownership of SpongeBob: Sponge on the Run over to the major streaming service.
Netflix Gets International Rights For New SpongeBob Movie
Due to the pandemic, SpongeBob: Sponge on the Run has been delayed twice by Paramount Animations and will not debut in theaters, but rather through video-on-demand at the beginning of 2021. The deal with Netflix exempts China, though, Netflix does not have services there, anyway. Netflix will stream the film in Canada and other countries where the streaming service is offered. There is not, however, an official date set for the foreign release of the film.
The news of this acquisition comes after several deals between Netflix and Paramount during the pandemic, including Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani's film Lovebirds and Aaron Sorkin's Trial of the Chicago 7.
