Naomi Watts Reflects On Complex Roles Inspired by Strong Women

Naomi Watts Brings "Penguin Bloom" to Life

Seeking authenticity in playing a woman who's life is shattered by an accident that leaves her paralyzed, Naomi Watts read the deeply personal journals of Sam Bloom, the protagonist in the new film from Netflix, "Penguin Bloom." Based on the book by Cameron Bloom and Bradley Trevor Greive, Naomi wanted to be sure to give an accurate account of the physical and psychological pain of a woman who has to try and rebuild her life and her impacted family relationships.

Over the course of her career, Naomi has been eager to take on complex roles featuring women of substance and character...

"I'm a woman who is looking to be inspired by other strong women."

Perhaps one of the best examples of her ability to bring that quality to her performance was in the role of former Miss America and broadcast journalist Gretchen Carlson in the 2019 TV mini-series, "The Loudest Voice," the story of the sexual harassment scandal that brought down Fox News founder and Republican political consultant Roger Ailes.

A vocal advocate for more substantial roles for older women in Hollywood, Naomi has taken matters into her own hands, working behind the camera as well as in front with 14 Producer and Executive Producer credits on her résumé. With "Penguin Bloom" hitting Netflix this Wednesday, January 27th and several other projects on the horizon including the "Game of Thrones" prequel, we're happy to congratulate Naomi and feature her as our #seeherofficial Spotlight Celebrity!
