During the premiere of Saturday Night Live's 46th season, Megan Thee Stallion took the stage to address the indictment of the officers involved in the Breonna Taylor murder. The musical guest made a powerful Black Lives Matter statement about protecting black women and men from perpetual hate and violence.
Last month, police officers Brett Hankison, Jonathan Mattingly, and Myles Cosgrove were not charged for the murder of Breonna Taylor. On March 13, they killed an innocent black woman in Louisville, Kentucky after firing 32 rounds of gunshots. African-American Attorney General Daniel Cameron indicted Hankison for wanton endangerment as some gunshots entered the apartment next to Breonna Taylor. However, he was not indicted for the actual killing of Breonna Taylor. This inhumane decision sparked protests across the nation as many activists for the BLM Movement were infuriated that the walls of someone else's apartment could be viewed as more valuable than a black life.
About halfway through her 'Savage' performance, the star paused the song as sounds of gunshots and audio messages from activists appeared on the screen. Malcolm X's iconic 1962 speech "Who Taught You to Hate Yourself?" played in a powerful way as the issues he talks about are still extremely relevant and true in today's climate.
"The most disrespected, unprotected, neglected person in America is the Black woman... Who taught you to hate the texture of your hair, the color of your skin, the shape of your nose? Who taught you to hate yourself from the top of your head to the soles of your feet?"
An audio clip of activist Tamika Mallory played who called into question how Daniel Cameron, as a black man, failed to bring justice to another unarmed black victim of police violence.
"Daniel Cameron is no different than the sellout Negroes that sold our people into slavery."
During her performance, Megan Thee Stallion also took the mic to speak her own thoughts about the matter.
"We need to protect our black women and love our black women. 'Cause at the end of the day, we need our black women. We need to protect our black men and stand up for our black men, because at the end of the day, we're tired of seeing hashtags of our black men."
The latest wave of the Black Lives Matter movement rose back in June after the immoral murder of George Floyd. Megan Thee Stallion brought up the matter of this collective black trauma from seeing the names of black men being wrongfully murdered solely because of their skin color.
