Keke Palmer is taking over the box office as she stars in two powerful new movies.
The Emmy winner plays the titular role in the movie Alice, directed by Krystin Ver Linden.
Inspired by true events, Alice is an enslaved woman in the 19th century who flees from a violent Georgia plantation owner. After traveling through time to the 1970s, she sets out on a quest for revenge.
"Here was an opportunity to tell a story and to educate people on something that hasn't been that common, as it pertains to the history of black people in America," Palmer said.
While the compelling film presents a new account of slavery, Palmer faced new challenges of her own when taking on the role.
"The way that the character Alice was portrayed... authentic interpretation of a black woman... she was not one beat, one tone, and she damn sure wasn't a victim. She shows strength while at the same time allowing herself to feel and to actually approach the kind of outrageous scenario she was in, in the most rounded way possible. So it's very much so a balancing act, but I think for me it was a great challenge as an actress."
Alice in theaters now.
But Alice isn't the only film that has fans talking.
Palmer is also starring in Jordan Peele's highly-antpcipated upcoming thriller, Nope, which is set to debut this summer.
"He writes about black people not because it's a gag or a gimmick, but because he's black. The way that he allows it to be portrayed on film is just so powerful."
Nope hits theaters July 22, 2022.
