Over the past few days, the new musical-drama Music has left many viewers unhappy and upset with Sia's directorial decisions.
Music stars Maddie Ziegler, Kate Hudson and Leslie Odom Jr. The film has received great backlash from the autism community, with many upset with Sia's decision to cast Ziegler as an autistic person, rather than casting someone who is a part of the autism community.
On Friday, Hudson chatted with Jimmy Kimmel about the controversy. She said:
"I think when people see the film that they will see the amount of love and sensitivity that was put into it," Hudson said. "But it is an important conversation to have, and it's not just about this movie as a whole, but about representation."
Hudson shared that she hadn't been asked about the controversy outside of requests for "a quote." She said:
"It's not a soundbite conversation. I think it's an ongoing, important dialogue to be had about neuro-typical actors portraying neuro-divergent characters."
Hudson also encouraged viewers to continue the "conversation." She told Kimmel:
"We're storytellers. We want to tell the best stories we can. There's no part of anybody who wants to upset anybody... When there are people who feel upset about anything, it's our job to I think listen and encourage more conversation with other people who want to tell these stories."
