Jussie Smollett Gives First Interview After Being Released From Jail

Jussie Smollett has finally opened up about his time in jail.

The "Empire" actor, who was sentenced to 150 days in prison in March for falsely reporting that he was a victim of a hate crime, was released just days after being put into custody.

Though he was released early, Smollett shared on the "Sway's Universe" podcast that his time behind bars helped him gain "clarity."

"There's something about and having no choice but to surrender."

Though, Smollett clarified, he does not believe the prison system is beneficial in creating positive change.

"That place is not meant for redemption," he shared. "That place is not meant to make you come out better than when you went in."

The actor maintains his innocence, calling many of his old colleagues who don't believe his story "snakes in the grass."

"The way that it was served to everybody, I absolutely understand why people felt betrayed. I didn't know what was happening then. I didn't know how bad it was getting," he said. "For whatever reason, I genuinely thought that people were going to be like, 'there's no way that he did some bullsh*t like that.' You know, I'm just like 'y'all know me.'"
