José Andrés, the founder of the World Central Kitchen, is scheduled to be honored with the 2021 Goodermote Humanitarian Award from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Center for Humanitarian Health. This award recognizes Andrés's decade of service to mankind as a culinary philanthropist, bringing meals to starving populations in the wake of natural disasters.

Chef Andrés began his career of humanitarianism back in 2010, when he created World Central Kitchen in order to prepare food for Haiti following a devastating earthquake. Since then, his non-profit group has used its revolutionary new model of disaster response to assist ravaged communities all over the globe. Andrés has graced countries such as Lebanon, Mozambique, Venezuela, and the United States with his zesty cuisine, while also helping to establish long-lasting food distribution systems in each nation. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, his foundation's efforts have been appreciated more than ever, with Andrés providing over 600,000 meals to frontline medical workers in India.

The Goodermote Humanitarian Award was created by software magnate Dean Goodermote, who chaired the Center for Humanitarian Health's advisory committee from 2006 to 2020 and has been part of the Bloomberg School's Health Advisory Board since 2005. Previous recipients of the Goodermote Humanitarian Award include news anchor Soledad O'Brien and NBA superstar Dikembe Mutombo.

To commemorate his achievement, Chef Andrés will join Paul Spiegel, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Humanitarian Health, at an event to discuss the benefits of organizations like World Central Kitchen. The discussion, at 5:30 PM EST, on June 17, 2021, will be moderated by Soledad O'Brien.
