Eight years ago, Jim Carrey and his co-author Dana Vachon sat down to write a book together. However, what they got in the end was far different than what fans and publishing companies ever expected.
Memoirs and Misinformation is a combination of several genres. It offers a tabloidy aspect, as well as an autobiographical and science fictional one. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Carrey described what the novel is about. He shared:
"It's difficult to describe what the book is. We write about celebrity as a device to talk about the human condition. Yes, it's about an apocalypse. But it's also about the apocalypse of the interior, of the ego."
Although the novel does not directly copy events from Carrey's life, it uses details from his career and moments throughout it to help tell a fictional story in Hollywood. Throughout the book, readers can see Carrey trying to find the meaning of life through a difficult world. In an interview with The New York Times, Carrey spoke about what he wants readers to take away from his words in the novel. He says:
"It's the end of the world, and we have the perfect book for it. Not the end of civilization. Just the end of a world, the selfish world. We're getting over the Ayn Rand, 'you can be a jerk and we can all live in a paradise of jerks' thing. That's what we're going through."
Readers are now able to get a closer look into Carrey's thoughts and life, even through a fictional novel. It is a must-read!
