This past Tuesday night, Jerry Seinfeld was a virtual guest at The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Aside from talking about Seinfeld's new book, Is This Anything?, the two talked about the COVID-19 pandemic, and how it has affected the comedian since he calls New York city, a place where COVID-19 hit hard, his home.
"Do you think the elbow thing is gonna last? It's not gonna last."
After Colbert brings up the "awkwardness" that comes with social distancing, Seinfeld brings up the "elbow shake" that has replaced the hug and the handshake and he expresses how tired he is of it:
"I'll tell you the thing I really don't care for is the little laugh that seems to have to accompany the elbow attempt. There's always the little laugh like...just either do it, don't do it, I don't think it's gonna last. Do you think the elbow thing is gonna last? It's not gonna last."
Hopeful About New York City
Seinfeld has been a resident of NYC forever and is not looking to change that. After being hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, the city has been left with many businesses shut down and Colbert asks him what he thinks of President Trump recently describing the city to be a "ghost-town." Seinfeld replies by explaining how people tend to think that the current state of things are how they always will be:
"We think today is everything. We struggle to zoom out to see this is all just another passing moment, it's all just passing moments."
Colbert replies, poking fun at Seinfeld's meditation methods:
"Are you being transcendental right now? Is this the mediation talking?"
The comedian, born and raised in New York is hopeful about the city he calls home and as for the elbow shake, we will have to wait and see if it sticks.
