One on One with Jane Fonda
We spoke with the unparalleled Jane Fonda at a Women’s Media Center awards event about women in media, her documentary, politics, and democracy.
On the importance of female representation in media, Fonda made the point that it isn't just for the benefit of women, but for everyone.
“Media is kind of what makes us understand our place in the world, and, if our narrative is not present in the media, then men suffer as much as women because you’re only getting half of the story.”
Among the honorees at the WMC event was Cindy Holland -- the woman in charge of all original programming for Netflix. Fonda stressed the impact of this role.
“Do you know how much original programming Netflix does?”
In addition to her Netflix series, Grace & Frankie, Fonda was recently the subject of an HBO documentary detailing her life, career, and influence on the world.
“It’s hard for me to watch it. It’s pretty raw, but I’m glad it’s resonating”
After a lifetime of political activism, Jane Fonda is uniquely qualified to comment on the upswell of engagement in our current political climate.
“People are changing. They’re starting to get it. They’re starting to understand that democracy isn’t a spectator sport and that you have to participate.”
