With recent works such as Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 well underway, actor Idris Elba is now looking to expand his music career.
The 49-year-old has his eyes set on something he's been wanting to revisit since he was a kid. He's been in shows and movies like The Wire, Luther, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, The Suicide Squad, Fast & Furious, and Avengers. Along the way are more films he'll star in that include Three Thousand Years of Longing and Beast, but Idris wants needs to branch out even more.
July 3rd of 2018 is when Idris launched his first record label called 7Wallace. A year later, he ended up DJing at Coachella under Tame Impala.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, he stated,
"Some may think, Well, it will be the death of your acting if your music’s shit. I’ve dealt with the internal struggle of that over the years. So now I’m at peace and I’ve chosen: This is what I’m doing, and I’m going to do it. Some will love it and some will hate it."
Elba has collaborated with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle even had him DJ at their wedding reception. Elba is fully embracing this new role.
"The thing about making music is it’s a very consuming process. It’s very difficult to shoot a movie and then go off into the studio or make a song."
His acting career won't be dying down anytime soon, though, as Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will be released in theaters April 8th.
