"Hunger Games" Prequel Release Date Announced

The Hunger Games' "Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" has officially gotten a release date!

The exciting news was announced by Lionsgate at CinemaCon on April 28 along with a teaser.

“You’re invited to return to the Games,” read the screen as a bird and snake appeared in a wintery backdrop. “In 2023, the world will discover who is a songbird and who is a snake.”

The latest installment of the "Hunger Games" franchise will be directed by Francis Lawrence, who previously worked on "Catching Fire," "Mockingjay Part One" and "Mockingjay Part Two," and is expected to hit theaters November 17, 2023.

The film will be produced by Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, and Lawrence. Writers for the film include author of the series, Suzanne Collins, as well as Michael Arndt and Michael Lesslie.

The Lionsgate synopsis for the film reads,

“In this return to The Hunger Games, years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow sees a chance for a change in fortunes when he is chosen to be a mentor to Lucy Gray Baird, the girl tribute from impoverished District 12.”

Following the smashing success of the original "Hunger Games" novels and movie trilogy, the novel "Hunger Games Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" was released in 2020 as a spinoff and prequel to the series.
