With most of the big 2019 movies now playing, we're breaking down what's hot and what's not.
Was the Fast & Furious franchise too boring for you? How about we add more mercenaries and give them a genetically enhanced super-soldier boss? Yeah, that should do it. Hobbs & Shaw blasted its way to the top of the box office for its opening weekend, bringing in $180 million. This bumped The Lion King back down to second place after the remake's two-week reign at the top.
The newest addition to the 18-year-old Fast & Furious franchise stars an action movie A-team: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Jason Statham, and Idris Elba. If you're looking for the most action-packed movie of the summer, this is it. In fact, this might be one of the most action-packed movies of all time! The movie has all of the classic chase scenes Fast & Furious fans want, and even a scene with The Rock pulling a helicopter out of the sky with his bare hands.
The Lion King keeps its claws in the second spot, after earning $430 million since opening on July 9th. This star-filled movie had a great reception with fans, although reviews weren't as positive as the original 1994 release. The Lion King's earnings since opening last month makes it the second biggest Disney movie of 2019, even rising above Toy Story 4. The only movie to beat The Lion King in the box office this year is Avengers: Endgame, which became the highest grossing movie of all time after making an unbelievable $2.7 billion.
Lastly, while he may have broken his own personal record, Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is locked in the third spot after premiering on July 26th. Even with lead stars Leonardo Dicaprio and Brad Pitt, the non-franchise film was up against media giants in Disney and Fast & Furious, which are projected to have a higher profits. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood tells the story of an actor and his stuntman slowly losing relevance and being forced to adapt to an evolving Hollywood. The film received fantastic reviews from critics, who saw Tarantino's love letter to classic Hollywood as a breath of fresh air. Following closely behind the top three films are Toy Story 4, Spiderman: Far from Home, and Yesterday.
With The Lion King as the summer's biggest blockbuster so far, it's unlikely Hobbs & Shaw will be able to top it. However, right now, the sports cars and explosions are drawing big crowds. If you need some good old engine-revving action, Tokyo-drift yourself to theaters this week to see Hobbs & Shaw.
