Derek Hough is an accomplished guy. He's lead a record six celebrity partners to victory on ABC's Dancing With the Stars , and now, he's showing off some acting chops. You can catch Derek in the all new season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series on Disney+ !
Derek is playing a rival theater teacher (and old flame) who knows exactly how to get under Miss Jen's skin. Derek talked with us about working on the set:
"I love shows that are just entertaining, and enjoyable to watch, and have great music, and dancing, yeah. It's just a lot of fun to be a part of, and sorry my guy [Derek's cat pops in the background] is making a little appearance here"
Despite having one of the more successful adulthoods you could ask for, Derek had a tough time as a kid finding a school where he belonged.
"I was bouncing around schools all the time, because I was getting, you know, bullied or beaten up or just didn't vibe. I just didn't have a great experience to be honest with you, and I eventually went to a school that was more performing arts, you know. Where it was celebrated to be a dancer, celebrated to do performing arts, I really thrived, I found my community, my place where I belong.
This may be his first acting role, but Hough is no stranger to the world of Disney, performing for multiple specials. And, of course, he's a mainstay on Dancing With the Stars , where Derek will be returning next season!
"I'll be back for season 30, which, can you believe it? Season 30? Like, what a milestone."
Until then, catch Derek on Disney+ sporting some of that Wildcat spirit!
