Two counts of indecent assault charges have been authorized by London authorities today against former film producer Harvey Weinstein.
UK authorities first began investigating Weinstein in October 2017. The new charges come after Weinstein's attempt to appeal his 2020 conviction was denied on Thursday in a New York appellate court.
In a press release, Head of the CPS Special Crime Division, Rosemary Ainslie said:
"The CPS has authorised the Metropolitan Police to charge Harvey Weinstein with two counts of indecent assault against a woman in August 1996."
Weinstein was first outed for decades of sexual misconduct in an article published by The New York Times back in October 2017. The article detailed the experiences of many women, including actresses Ashley Judd and Rose McGowan. After its release, dozens of other women, like Cara Delevingne, stepped forward with their experiences with Weinstein.
Many more expulsions and accusations later, in February 2020, Weinstein was convicted of a criminal sex act in the first degree against former production assistant Mimi Haleyi and third degree rape against former actress Jessica Mann.
Weinstein was sentenced the following month to 23 years in prison. While serving his sentence, five other women came forward and additional charges were brought on the defamed director. He was extradited to California in July 2021, and awaits trial.
