Grace VanderWaal on the Future of Female Empowerment

We talk to the stars at Rolling Stone's Women Shaping the Future event about female empowerment.

Our Arthur Kade is at Rolling Stone's Women Shaping the Future event talking to Grace VanderWaal, Violett Beane, Piper Perabo, Lea Delaria, and Carla Hall about female empowerment and how women are leading the way into the future!

Rolling Stone

Intelligence Is In

Speaking on Rolling Stone's March cover, which features Democrats Nancy Pelosi, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar and Jahana Hayes, actress Violett Beane tells Kade:

"...It says that women can sell magazines with their intelligence, not necessarily with their bodies. I think that shows little girls everywhere, and men and women of all ages everywhere, that women can do this, and that they deserve to be highlighted for their achievements."

Women in Power

On seeing an ensemble of women in leadership positions grace a magazine cover, actress Piper Perabo tells Kade that "it's about time."

"I think women have always led the way in culture, so I'm excited to see that kind of rock n' roll vibe where women are leading as well," Perabo says.

Praise for Rolling Stone

Actress and comedian Lea Delaria praises Rolling Stone for its "history and grasp of women's rights."

"It's also just badass," Delaria adds, telling Kade that the magazine was the first to write an article on her, the first openly-gay comic on television in America, at the start of her career.

"I mean, I think they're killing it," Dalaria says.

A Ways to Go

Artist Grace VanderWaal spoke with Kade about how she sees the future of female empowerment in the entertainment industry.

"I think there's still a lot of room for improvement, and a lot of growth, but I think that it's also really nice to just take a second to see what we've done, 'cause we have come a long, long way, and we've done a lot of great things."

Chef Carla Hall echoes these sentiments with a line that seems to sum up the night's event:

"I think women are the can-do people right now."
