Coronavirus has officially stolen The #GoldenGlobes from us. Read more here:

Not even the usually highly anticipated award show could bring spirits up this year.

Sunday night's Golden Globes had ratings plunge to only 6.9 million viewers, down 64% from the show the year before.

The Nielsen company said that 2020's pre-lockdown Golden Globe show reached approximately 18.4 million viewers, a very sizable difference than this year's COVID-era show.

The award show usually resembles more of a party with some of your favorite, tipsy celebs and enjoyable comedic bits. This type of atmosphere could not fare well with pressures of the Coronavirus pandemic and restrictions.

Speculations reason that remote celebrities and awkward Zoom bits mixed together made for a rather low-spirits show. Even our two favorites hosts, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, weren't even able to safely appear together onscreen to liven the event a bit.

The last time the Golden Globes received ratings this low was during the 2008 writer's strike. The show was forced to be be a televised press conferences where the winners were formally announced. AP reported 6 million viewers of this event, very similar to the show this year that tried much harder than a press conference but to no avail.

There were some positive moments, such as Chloé Zhao making history as the first Asian woman to win Best Director, as well as her film Nomadland being the first movie directed by a female to win Best Picture for a Drama.

While there is nothing to blame except the pandemic, which has inevitably bogged down the entire country into low spirits for the past year, we can't help but wonder what could have been done to save the show. However, this just means we have to try even harder for the years to come!
