Tuesday morning, prolific actor George Segal passed away at the age of 87. He had a decades-long career in the industry.

"The family is devastated to announce that this morning George Segal passed away due to complications from bypass surgery," his wife Sonia Segal reported in a statement for Sony Television.

He had had an expansive career that took of in the late sixties. Among his most notable films are Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in 1966, for which he was nominated for an Oscar, A Touch of Class in 1973, The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox in 1976, and Fun with Dick and Jane in 1977.

Although Segal's typecast veered more toward comedy and wit, he played other characters like the cunning corporal king in the war drama King Rat in1965, which was an adaptation of a James Clavell novel.

The actor really flourished in his roles in comedy, and later on, his appearances on television in the nineties. For instance, he charmed audiences as the fashion magazine owner Jack Gallo in Just Shoot Me!, for which he was on for seven seasons. In 2013, he was continuing his career in TV as Pops Solomon, the lovingly womanizing grandfather on ABC'sThe Goldbergs, which is set in the 1980s. The producer of the show, Adam F. Goldberg, fondly remembers Segal. "Just like my grandfather, George was a kid at heart with a magical spark."

A statement from The Goldbergs had nothing but wonderful things to say about the late and great actor. "On behalf of everyone at the Goldbergs, we are devastated at the loss of our dear friend George," it read. "He was kind, sweet, beyond talented and funny. George was the true epitome of class, and he touched all of our lives so deeply. It was an honor and a privilege to have him as a colleague and friend all of these years. It is no surprise to any of us that knew him so well that he is a true national treasure."

Segal is survived by his wife Sonia and his two daughters, Polly and Elizabeth.
