French actor and model Gaspard Ulliel, who is set to appear in Marvel's forthcoming TV series Moon Knight, has died aged 37.

Ulliel, one of France's best-known actors, has appeared in It's Only the End of the World and biopic Saint Laurent.

The actor was skiing in the Savoie region of the Alps when he collided with another, suffering severe brain trauma. The Cesar-winning actor was airlifted to a hospital in Grenoble. According to news agency AFP, local authorities have opened an investigation into the accident.

The news of his death came just a day after the release of the trailer for Moon Knight, in which he stars as Midnight Man.

"French cinema is losing a huge talent, full of charm and energy," tweeted French finance minister Bruno Le Maire.

Ulliel, who was highly selective about the roles he chose, starred in Xavier Dolan's It's Only the End of The World, along with Marion Cotillard, Léa Seydoux, and Vincent Cassel; Jean-Pierre Jeunet's A Very Long Engagement, as well as Bertrand Tavernier's La Princesse de Montpensier. All three films competed at Cannes.

Born just outside of Paris, Ulliel appeared on-screen from an early age but garnered international recognition for his performance as a young Hannibal in the 2007 film Hannibal Rising.

Aside from being a movie star, Ulliel also appeared as the face of Chanel aftershave.

Ulliel is survived by his 6-year-old son Orso and his girlfriend Gaelle Petri.
