1. Government shutdown looking more and more likely
Congress has just nine days to come to an agreement on government funding, otherwise the government will shut down at the end of the month. House Republicans earlier this week presented a stopgap measure that includes a nearly 8 percent cut on most federal agencies, as well as stricter border restrictions. The proposal also excluded funding for Ukraine and disaster relief.
The measure has yet to pass the House of Representatives thanks to holdouts from some of the party's more conservative members. The bill is highly unlikely to pass through the Democratic-controlled Senate, even if it makes it through the House.
2. Biden deploys 800 troops to southern border as crossings spike
The Biden Administration announced that it is deploying 800 troops to assist at the southern border as it sees an influx of migration.
The active-duty personnel will focus on “logistics and other functions at the border to allow more Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents and officers to return to their core mission and responsibilities," the White House said Wednesday.
Migrant crossings at the United States’ southern border are on the rise, according to the Department of Homeland Security, who said that there were more than 8,000 apprehensions on Monday.
3. Rupert Murdoch to step down from Fox News in November
Media mogul Rupert Murdoch, 92, is stepping down as chairman of the board for both Fox Corp. and News Corp. The transition is set to become complete by November.
