The basketball community is mourning the loss of former NBA player Adreian Payne.
Payne, who formerly played for the Atlanta Hawks, Minnesota Timberwolves and Orlando Magic, passed away at the age of 31 on May 9, Detroit Free Press confirmed.
According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Payne died as a result of a shooting that took place at 1:30 a.m. in Florida. He was rushed to a local hospital but pronounced dead.
According to MLive reporter Kyle Austin, the shooter "stayed at the scene and has been arrested on a warrant for first-degree murder."
Payne notably played for Michigan State from 2010-2014, winning Big Ten titles in '12 and '14.
In 2014, Payne was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks. He played in the NBA for four seasons and went on to play internationally in Greece, China and Lithuania.
Orlando Magic spokesman Joel Glass shared of the news,
“Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family during this difficult time."
