In today's Equality Spotlight, we discuss the first ever National Black Voter Day, as well as renowned actress and singer Deborah Joy Winans - who is making new music for change.
A Powerful Tribute
The Winans are known to be the first family of gospel music - and it's no wonder that Deborah Joy Winans is a part of their legacy. As the talented actress just starred in the hit TV series Greenleaf, Deborah has now switched her efforts to music.
Winans' new song, I Won't Stop Breathing, came during the beginning of the Black Lives Matter movement this summer as a tribute to the black lives lost this year. When asked about the song, Deborah said:
"I just was broken, as I'm sure so many people were and still are. I just decided I wanted to do a visual, because that was important to me. I wanted to honor the people that we've lost, our brothers and our sisters."
'Greenleaf' Star
Deborah also stars in the Greenleaf series alongside Oprah Winfrey, Lynn Whitfield and Keith David. She plays Charity Greenleaf, the youngest child of the family.
BET Hosts First National Black Voter Day
BET is celebrating National Black Voter day, which is being help on September 18th. The program has organized several events throughout the day for people to watch - some of these events include a virtual conversation with former US Congressmen Beto O'Rourke, a National Black Voter Day Twitter chat, and a prep rally to help others get pepped up for voting.
