Dan Levy sure knows how to get our attention!
The cast for the Emmy-winning Schitt's Creek alum's directorial debut film — entitled Good Grief — was just announced today, and it features a whole bunch of notable names, like out Beauty and the Beast star and eternal heartthrob Luke Evans, Oscar-nominated Loving and Passing actress Ruth Negga, and Emmy-nominated Yesterday star Himesh Patel.
Written and directed by Levy, Good Grief is the first project from Levy's Not A Real Production Company and tells the story of a man named Marc Dreyfus who has "chosen to distract himself from the loss of his mom with a comfortable marriage," according to a description of the film from Deadline. "But when his husband also dies, unexpectedly, Marc is forced to finally confront the grief he’s tried so hard to avoid, sending him and his two closest friends on a Parisian weekend of self-discovery."
It is also the first title from Levy's overall multi-project Netflix deal,Details about Good Grief are still scarce (we're still not sure who Evans, Negga, and Patel will be playing) but it's good to see that Levy is creating the diverse and inclusive content featuring out, LGBTQ+ talent we've been wanting in the world, and we can't wait to see it all on the small screen in the near future!
“It’s still in its early days. I’m an optimist, so I have high hopes. It’s still very much in development,” Levy told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year when he was teasing details about the upcoming rom-com. “I love genre and I’m a film student. I love the idea of seeing what I could do with a genre and in this case, I thought, ‘What would my idea of a rom-com be?’ It ended up having more to do with friendships in your 30s than actual romantic relationships. What would a love story look like if it was really about a group of friends in their mid-30s? The clarity that comes with age and the time you’ve spent with these people.”
He continued:
“Sometimes we have people in our lives, decades-long friendships, but we know very little about them because the closeness and the intimacy of those relationships is so comfortable that we don’t ask the big questions or investigate them in the way that someone that you meet for the first time might feel inclined to. There’s romance in the movie, obviously, but really, it’s a love story about friendship.”
