We had the honor of sitting down with Chloé Zhao to discuss her making history by being only the second woman to win the Golden Globe's Best Director title.
Zhao's 2020 drama film Nomadland is sweeping award season clean this year, including the big awards like Best Film and Best Director. Advocate Channel correspondent Rachel Smith asked the director how it felt to get such wonderful recognition on her hard work. Zhao, ever so humble, said:
"I mean, it takes a village, you know, and I have such an incredible team who works so hard, and it's really great that everyone's getting their recognition."
Nomadland takes place in Nevada and the location of the film plays a big role in the plot. We asked Zhao what the experience shooting in Nevada's deserts and wide open spaces was like:
"I love wide open spaces, I love seeing the horizon. I also love Las Vegas, I'd love to make a film in Las Vegas one day."
Lastly, we spoke with Zhao about the uprising of female filmmakers this year and how important this representation during award season is. We asked her what advice she has for younger girls who want to follow in similar footsteps:
"I think the most important thing is to stay true to who you are because who you are is good enough. You know, don't try to fit into what you think the business might want, because who you are as a young girl- that is the story we want to hear."
Nomadland is streaming on Hulu and playing in select theaters now.
