For the first time its history, NYC's iconic Central Park will have a statues that feature real-life women.
Commemorating the 100 year anniversary of the Women's Suffrage Movement, Central Park will feature a 14-foot-tall bronze monument with suffrage leaders Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. In the park's 167-year history, there has never been a statue featuring real life women.
The event will be broadcasted via Monumental Women's social media platforms. The initial goal of the organization was to create the first statue of real women in Central Park, but now the organization is now doing so much more. According to the their website, Monumental Women also aims to:
"Increase awareness and appreciation of Women's History through a nationwide education campaign and challenging municipalities across the country to rethink the past and reshape the future by including tributes in their public spaces to the diverse women who helped create and inspire those cities."
Billie Jean King, a tennis icon and women's equality pioneer, took to Twitter to share a photo of the statue ahead of its unveiling to the public.
Behind the groundbreaking monument is sculpture Meredith Bergmann, who will reveal the piece to the world on August 26th.
