One can make the case that we are in a golden era of television. With more viewing options and channels existing now more than ever, the streaming revolution has given birth to high budget series with rich storylines and characters. At this year's Primetime Emmy Awards, two shows are standing out above the rest with their nomination count.
With both up for 24 overall nominations, Netflix's The Crown and Disney Plus' The Mandalorian are the talk of the town heading into the 73rd Primetime Emmys. Both shows are nominated for Best Drama Series alongside Bridgerton, Lovecraft Country, Pose, The boys, The Handmaid's Tale, and This is Us.
Season four of The Crown dove into the highly publicized relationship between Princess Diana and the Royal Family. Met with critical acclaim, much of the cast is up for a nomination at this year's Emmys. Tobias Menzies, who plays Prince Phillip II in season four, shares with us what it means to be recognized for his work on the series:
"It's a lovely thing to happen. To be recognized by an organization like the Emmys...a lot of work went into that (The Crown), it's been a big part of my life over the last couple years so to have that recognized is a real pleasure."
Season five of the hit Netflix series is expected to premiere sometime in 2022.
Alongside The Crown, Disney Plus' The Mandalorian is bringing serious competition to the rest of the field this year. The Star Wars live action series follows Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), a Mandalorian and bounty hunter who crosses paths with Grogu, affectively known as Baby Yoda. Din ends up saving Baby Yoda from the hands Moff Gidean (Giancarlo Esposito).
Grabbing nominations all over the board, from Best Drama to Best Visual Effects, season two of the hit series married classic Star Wars canon alongside new storylines that were flushed out by executive producers Jon Favreau and David Filoni.
While there is no release date yet for season three of The Mandalorian, Disney announced that a new spinoff project titled The Book of Boba Fett will premiere in time for Christmas 2021.
Both shows will face off Sunday, September 12th when the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards air on CBS.
