It was announced on Thursday morning that the Telluride Film Festival had found its guest director: Academy Award winner Barry Jenkins.
As guest director, Jenkins will be responsible for selecting the films that will be featured at the festival. In 2016, his film Moonlight was featured at the festival. This jumpstarted the film's Oscar campaign and it went on to win Best Picture. Naturally, fans are looking forward to seeing what films Jenkins will choose this year. The Telluride Film Festival begins on September 2nd, 2021.
Last month, Jenkins released his television adaptation of Colson Whitehead's Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Underground Railroad. The ten-episode series, starring, Thuso Mbedu, William Jackson Harper, and Aaron Pierre, was released on Amazon Prime Video on May 14th 2021. The series tells a fictional account of the real-life network of abolitionists called The Underground Railroad. With Juneteenth being officially recognized as a federal holiday, this historical drama can help contextualize how meaningful this recognition is.
