Barack Obama's step-grandmother has died at the age of 99 in Kenya. Sarah Obama, popularly known as Mama Sarah, was a very important figure in the Obama's family.
Sarah Obama was the third wife of Obama's grandfather Hussein Onyango Obama and raised Barack Obama's father. Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta stated the following on Twitter:
"The passing away of Mama Sarah is a big blow to our nation. We've lost a strong, virtuous woman. A matriarch who held together the Obama family and was an icon of family values."
Former President Obama's half-sister Auma shared her sorrow as well, but is also grateful to have had her "for so long!"
Sarah Obama helped indigent children in education through her foundation and in 2014 she received the United Nation's Pioneer Award for it.
