Less than a month ago, the new Army of the Dead prequel series released its first promotional images. Today, the official trailer for the show (entitled Army of Thieves) was released.
Immediately, it becomes clear that safe-cracker Ludwig Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer) will be the protagonist, whereas in Army of the Dead he was merely a side character. The trailer shows him getting in contact with a mysterious society, represented by Gwendoline (played by Game of Thrones actress Nathalie Emmanuel), who want Dieter's unique skillset for a special heist. With all of America distracted by a zombie apocalypse, there will never be a better opportunity for theft.
Dieter won't be alone in this zesty endeavor. Joining him are a crew of oddball thieves, including characters played by Scottish actor Stuart Martin (Game of Thrones) and Guz Khan (who appeared alongside Emmanuel in Mindy Kaling's Four Weddings and a Funeral miniseries). The trailer doesn't reveal who their opponents will be, only that there will be a lot of guns, a lot of cars, and a massive fortune for the taking.
The film's synopsis is "in this prequel to Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead, small-town bank teller Dieter gets drawn into the adventure of a lifetime when a mysterious woman recruits him to join a crew of Interpol's most wanted criminals, attempting to heist a sequence of legendary, impossible-to-crack safes across Europe."
Army of Thieves will be directed by Schweighöfer and written by Snyder and Shay Hatten, who co-wrote the original. The film is scheduled to be released on Netflix in late 2021.
