On top of writing the songs for Disney's Encanto, Lin-Manuel Miranda is also making his directorial debut with the release of Tick, Tick...Boom!
Tik, Tik...Boom! follows an aspiring young theater composer named Jon as he experiences the pressure of crafting something noteworthy before he enters his 30's. Feeling the stress from almost every area of his life--his girlfriend, his job at the diner, his closest friend, and the AIDs epidemic raging through his theater group--Jon must figure out what to do with the time he has.
Our correspondent Rachel Smith caught up with Miranda and the film's lead, Andrew Garfield.
Tik, Tik...Boom! is an adaptation of Jonathan Larson's autobiographical musical. The film tells the true story of Larson's ambitious beginning in composing, which eventually led to his remarkable breakthrough into theater. During his career, Larson created some massive waves in the musical industry as he completely transformed the world of theater with Rent."I feel very, very grateful to have been a part of it and to be able to bring it to people, it's a beautiful feeling. I learned to sing for this, I got a chance to work with great coaches and had all the time to get my voice to the place where I could feel like I could start to honor John Larson, so I just feel so grateful," Garfield said.
"This show is everything I know. I lived through my 20's as a struggling musical theater composer. I know what it's like to feel the immense pressure of having a whole musical in your head and the gulf between that and anyone ever seeing it and the world taking notice. Music and story in the right combination can just, like, move you, like nothing else really can. Not quite sure why people make things that aren't musicals," Miranda said.
