Amy Schumer has revealed a big secret about her lifelong disorder.
In an episode of the new Hulu series "Life & Beth," executive produced by Amy Schumer, Beth, played by Schumer, battles trichotillomania, a disorder that causes a compulsive desire to pull one's hair out. Schumer recently shared that she, too, suffers with the disorder.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Schumer shared,
"I really don't want to have a big secret anymore. And I thought putting it in there would be good for me to alleviate some of my shame and maybe, hopefully, help others alleviate some of theirs, too."
The episode displayed Schumer ripping out her hair as a coping mechanism, leading to her mother purchasing a very visible and fitted wig. Schumer even noted that "everybody knew" she wore a wig, adding on to her already embarrassed persona. That trauma didn't stop her from trying to help others with their conditions, though.
"I think everybody has a big secret and that's mine. And I'm proud that my big secret only hurts me but it's been what I've carried so much shame about for so long."
If this isn't enough stress on her, Schumer gets anxious about her 3-year-old son Gene inheriting the disorder.
She opened up about it, saying:
"Every time he touches his head I'm having a heart attack."
The body-focused repetitive behavior organization TLC Foundation praised Schumer for showcasing a true depiction of the disorder. The executive director of TLC Foundation told The Hollywood Reporter,
"Our community is breathing a collective sigh of relief after having our behaviors mischaracterized and misinterpreted for so many years."
