American Music Awards Recap: Winners, Performances, And Big Moments

AMAs Recap

It's one of the most anticipated nights in music awards.

The annual American Music Awards were last night, and we've got you covered in case you missed it. The heavily anticipated music award show was hosted this year by Taraji P. Henson, who did a phenomenal job even with a cardboard cutout audience rather than a real one due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are all the highlights of the night:

The Biggest Wins of the Night

While there were several winners last night, there were a few that stood out - including Taylor Swift, who had an extremely successful night. Not only did she win Favorite Music Video and Favorite Female Pop/Rock Artist, she also took home Artist of the Year. This comes after her surprise release of her album 'folklore' earlier this year. While she was not able to physically be there, Swift told us it was because she's currently re-recording all of her old songs in her original music studio again. Right when you think she couldn't become more successful, these wins bring her overall award total to a whopping 32. Congrats T-Swift!

Another big winner - the Weeknd went out with a bang last night, winning 3 AMA awards for Favorite Male Artist, Favorite Song, and Favorite Soul/R&B Album. If you're wondering why he has bandages wrapped all over his head, it is from his theme of his recent music videos for his album 'After Hours.'

But that's not it for the Weeknd yet - he performed two songs off of his 'After Hours' album with Kenny G on a closed bridge in Los Angeles for the music award show.

Other big wins of the night included Doja Cat for New Artist of the Year, Dan + Shay with Justin Bieber, '10,000 Hours' for Collaboration of the Year, and Harry Styles 'Fine Line' for Album of the Year.

Big Performances of the Night

Artist performances are just as important as the awards for a music show, and the AMA's brought the heat last night. Total performances included Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes, Katy Perry, the Weeknd, Megan Thee Stallion, Billie Eilish, Nelly, and Jennifer Lopez and Maluma, and BTS.

Justin Bieber opened up the performances with his newest hits 'Lonely' and 'Holy,' and stayed on the stage to wait for Shawn Mendes to sing their new duet 'Monster' together, which dropped recently this past Friday.

Dan + Shay celebrated their win by performing their newest single 'I Should Probably Go To Bed.' It was beautiful, and people consider it one of the best performances of the night.

Jennifer Lopez never fails to make us wonder how a person can be so talented at performing. She danced and sang two songs that will be on her and Maluma's upcoming romantic comedy Marry Me.

And last but not least, BTS closed out the night with their songs 'Dynamite' and 'Life Goes On.' The group had an extremely successful night along with their performance, as they won Favorite Pop/Rock Duo of Group and Favorite Social Artist.

Through all of the craziness that has happened in 2020, the AMA's brought a fantastic show - and we can't wait for next year's.
